Hello Everyone,

My name is Suzy Zrake. I am an ADHD Adult, a Child/Adult Advocate and a member and Support Group Leader for over nine years with the Attention Deficit Disorder - Southern Region in Houston. I have been online answering ADHD questions for some time now. Many of us ADDer's have trouble holding down good jobs, or we have trouble finding suitable work situations willing to accommodate our challenges.

For example, we understand our assignments very clearly, but can't seem to get anything done. The attempt to hide our lack of productivity catches up with us... mainly because we don't ask for accommodations. This leads our boss to think he might have an unstable employee on his hands. He begins to look for ways to let us go.

Another example might be that we just can't seem to get to work on time... no matter how hard we try! Have you experienced this one? I know many who have and it's not much fun! How about being distracted by our co-worker playing their radio, or the fans making too much noise? Some of these problems may sound familiar to you. Many of us do not recognize the extent to which our ADD affects our behavior and our interaction with others in the workforce environment.

If you are an ADHD student, parent or an ADHD teacher, than you understand this scenario... perfectly well. I have experienced these dilemmas far too long! It's taken nearly half my lifetime to find that special opportunity. Well, any job dependent on excellent intuition, empathy, a great sense of humor and the love for working with diverse populations will benefit from my skills. I'm great at troubleshooting, creativity, making things happen and fixing things. On the other hand, my impulsivity causes me to act first before thinking. My need to learn things by doing rather than by learning from someone else's experience... leads to misunderstandings. I've been at a disadvantage because of my differences, but NOT any longer!

Remember, although our ADD-related behavior can cause problems in the work environment, they can also be used in constructive ways to our advantage. Mrs. Weiss explains it well, "ADD is only a different way of being wired, and that means we do things in a unique way, not a wrong way, just a different way."
